A MODEST PROPOSAL

The story called “A modest proposal”, in my opinion has no relation with the values of fairness and justice. Before getting into the reasons that will support my idea, it is important to have the meaning of these two important values clear for our knowledge. Fairness is an impartial and just treatment or behaviour without favouritism or discrimination. It is the quality of being reasonable, right and just.  When i listen to the word “fairness” i immediately think of equality, it just pops in my mind. It is not to choose someone over the other for selfish reasons. While Justice is the condition of being morally correct or right, it is fairness in the way people are treated or dealt with. These two values, as you can see, are very similar.

The reasons of why i believe that there are none of these two values in the story is because the proposal that Jonathan Swift made is unfair. The proposal he made was to feed the 1 year old children to the wealthier. This is a very cruel proposal to begin with and he made this decision in a moment of crisis. Ireland was having a lot of problems by the time, the country was suffering from overpopulation and an economy crisis as well. Since he didn’t know how to put a solution to this problem he came up with this shocking and crazy proposal. It is true that the poor in Ireland needed money to survive but that is not the way to do it. Taking a child away from them and killing them to use them as food is not an alternative. He could have found another more humane way to find a solution to this problem. It is also unfair to take away the life of an innocent child who has done nothing to hurt the people of the town or anyone at all. The man who made this proposal, to be fair, had to put himself in the position of the parents. How cruel would it be for someone to take away the most precious thing in their lives. Of course, Jonathan Swift, the man who made this proposal, had no idea what it would feel life since he has not had that opportunity, he had no children that would make him be able to feel what the poor parents are feeling. He had no one, and no humanity or empathy for the others either.
